"I'm as silent as the grave," except on Microfiction Monday!

Well today marks the big '60' for the Microfiction Monday Meme. Our host Susan over at Stony River posts a picture with a challenge-to write a story about it in 140 characters or less (including spaces and punctuation.) Here is this week's picture and my two takes:

Rambling weeds and creeping moss,
Wrap around the crumbling cross.
A name and date once graced the stone,
Marking a life that now is gone.
(138 characters)

She stared at the massive gravestones blackened by time and neglect-their purpose was to mark the end, but life had gone on around them. (136 characters)

I was struck by the sadness of the scene so no humor in my entries today, although it does almost look as if the one stone is trying to lean away from the other. I am anxious to see if anyone else picked up on that in a comical way.

And if you are new here, why not try a passage out yourself? Just be sure to link back to Stony River.

  1. Hi Susan. Yes I went for the serious side too, although I did consider a humorous version. I also went for poetry - great minds eh?!

I did enjoy yours, especially the juxtaposition between death and the verdant life around.

  2. I like the somber mood of both posts, but my favorite is the poem--excellent, Susan!

  3. Great ones today Susan! I liked to ponder who the "she" could be in your second one. A story may be there. Hoping to get my microfiction up soon.

  5. Dom,I read your poetry and you are in a much different league, but I appreciate your kindness :)

Pat, For some reason I thought of poetry first with this one.

  6. It's so sad when we can no longer read the names on the stones. It's like there is nobody left to remember the person. Have a great week.

  7. Both of yours were great, Susan. I think the graveyard is indeed sad looking, but that didn't stop me from crusading about shopping!

I'm always impressed that you do both poetry and prose. Magnifico!

    Have a great week.

  9. Love them both, but the poem is my favourite! I went somber this week too...difficult to be humourous in such dark surroundings.
    Have a great week. Cheers!

  10. I came over from Dominic's blog to meet you.

I see mostly serious (not good with humor but wish I were). I like your poem very much!! Rhyme isn't easy to do successfully. This works beautifully!!! It's a haunting photograph, I think.

  13. Susan,
Your poetry is beautiful and is so appropriate to this sad picture. I just had to do the humorous one on this one - too sad otherwise! Have a wonderful week!

  14. Interesting view of the picture. My eye was drawn to the light (Go to the light...no...not that light) and to the colors of nature. You so beautifully stated how the picture affected you.

  15. Both of your pieces are hauntingly beautiful.

I saw the funny in this immediately. The leaning away from each other was just one of the funnies about this. Here's my go at it: Irony.

  16. Both are excellent and perfect accompaniments to the photo. A nice balance of eerie and melancholy.

  17. Life had definitely gone on around them!
    Thanks.

  18. yes it is more of a sad pic. I noticed the leaning but it would be funny to see a fun twist in a story because of it.

I didn't enter Microfiction Monday this week but I'm having a giveaway, stop by and enter if you have time.

  25. What a wonderful thing you did with that photo!

And yes, I saw that leaning-away thing too -- and thought, wow, this is what my husband's and my graves would look like, if our kids put us together in the end! ROFL

  26. You've done well on 2 counts. One to keep within the 140 limit and the other was to put it in poetry form. Great!
